Carolyn's Poetry Compositions! :D

Darkness

Why is it so dark?
It's still early.
Yet it is dark.
Walking homefrom a long day at work.
In the dark.
Where is the light?
I want it to shine upon me.
To make me feelthe warm tingly feeling.Like the feeling that someone,someone out there can see the real you.
But right now,there is no light.
No one out there to see the real me.
There's just me and my friend;
Darkness.

I feel as if someone's watching me.
But they cannot really see me.
Because it's dark.

I feel as if I'm being followed.
I look behind me.
And the only thing there is darkness.

I just want light.
Is that too much to hope for?
In the dark.
I feel the eerie presence of the darkness.
Like the darkness is following my every move.
As I start to walk faster.
Through the darkness.
Wondering whenI will finally feel the warmth.
Of light.
-Carolyn Luu

In this poem, you know that the scenery is dark. I wrote this poem at about 5:30pm and it was already dark and I saw an old lady walking outside. Even though it would've been cold, she seemed happy and content. Some people can have everything and never be content whilst others can have nothing and feel like their the luckiest person on Earth. Some people feel that even though they are there and it seems like everyone can see them, they are never really noticed. No one talks to them or even smiles at them. They seem to glance at you quickly and glance away. When I said "I feel as if someone's watching me. But they cannot really see me." Of course they are seen but they aren't really noticed. I feel that everyone has something to offer, it just depends if you're willing to accept them for who they are. I wrote this poem through the eyes of a young adult who works very hard just to bring food on the table and wishes to be noticed, not just seen.

As you can see, this poem as a blank verse which means that they don't rhyme. I have also used some poetic techniques such as repetition, imagery and personification. I have deliberately repeated the word dark or darkness many times so that the readers (you) will be able to feel the darkness. When I wrote that the darkness was following me, I was using personification. I have also deliberately separated "Of light" to "I will finally feel the warmth." to create a feeling that they are really craving light, that what they truly want the most, is light.

I feel that many people may be able to relate to this poem and truly wish to be noticed for who they are. The feeling that no one will accept you or even care enough to try and get to know them.

Tissues

So soft and fluffy.
There to wipe away the tears.
Something so simple.

Saara's Poetry Compositions

Four Seasons

Summer

The sun brightly shines

Humid air upon your neck

Beads of sweat glisten

Autumn

Knits, leggings with boots

Crunch over all coloured leaves

Strewn about the ground

Winter

As temperatures fall

Like snowflakes drop to the ground

Snow angels buried

Spring

Winter melts to spring

Butterflies float to flowers

As does its pollen

- Saara Imtiaz

I wrote these poems on a typical 'Melbourne' afternoon at the start of autumn. I watched as the weather change abruptly from fairly warm and bright with the sun glaring straight into my eyes to what seemed like a day that had been overcast, windy and wet. As I listened to the rain tapping against my window, I began to write about this weather.
I began to realise that it was similar to winter weather even though it was just the start of autumn, so I wrote a poem about what I pictured when I thought of each of these seasons. I then thought to continue and compose the other two seasons. They each have different characteristics which identify them, so I wrote about these.
I always find summer unbearably hot with everybody sweating in the blazing, hot sun.
Thinking of autumn, I picture multicoloured leaves covering every inch of the ground. Whenever I see leaves fallen on the ground, I always step on them just to hear the crunch sound.
Winter is always unbearably cold, and snow comes to mind.
Thinking about spring, I imagine warm, sunny days filled with blooming flowers and butterflies in the air.
I wrote these poems in haiku form as I thought that poems about nature have more effect in haiku form. It would also ensure that there are plenty of adjectives to paint a clear picture of the scene I picture when I think of these seasons.
I used similes in the first line of ‘Winter’ to show how the temperature slowly falls. Another simile was used in ‘Spring’ to say that pollen from the flowers floats around during spring. I used onomatopoeia in ‘Autumn’ to give effect for the fallen leaves. I used the line ‘Knits, leggings with boots’ to try and show what clothing is worn and to also help picture someone walking through layers of multicoloured leaves which cover the ground.
I also used imagery in all of my poems to help the reader picture the scenes in their mind and make it obvious about which season I was talking about.

Helena's Poetry Compositions

The Winter (It's cold tonight)

It’s cold tonight.
And so am I.
I'm cold tonight and the moon is bright,
I wish I was sitting by a fire and have its’ light;
A warm kind of light, not like the moon’s raw arctic freezing fluorescent light.
And I wish I was warm like the mug of hot chocolate I wish I was holding
but I'm not.
And I wish I was holding a TV remote in the palm of my hand
but I'm not.
I only have myself to keep me awake on cold nights like these.

I wonder what it would be like;
To sleep like a bear all winter but I can’t;
Because I'm not a bear.

I wonder what it would be like;
To be a fish and not have to breathe for a while but I’ll keep wondering;
Because I’m not a fish.

And the air is cold tonight;
It stings my nose and it makes me sneeze.
I’m sneezing like a curious fox that’s just stuck its’ nose into the back of a hedgehog while burrowing into its den, wondering what was inside.

Being too curious for its own good.

It’s cold tonight.

-Helena Niu

I was inspired to write this poem on a cold night, hence the general theme. While I enjoyed the comfort of ducted heating, I started wondering about people who don't have the luxurious life we lead. People who don't have heating, or a fireplace, or hot chocolate or television. People who can't afford the luxuries of these everyday things we take for granted. When I mention about wanting to be like animals in the carefree and stress free way they live their lives, you can’t help but wonder; what would it be like, to be like a bear and sleep all winter, instead of being in the hectic mess we all find ourselves in sometime or another?

In the first verse, I am inspecting my dismal surroundings, and seeing what everyone has, everyone except for me of course. I’m stuck out here under the moon’s raw arctic freezing fluorescent light while others are with their families inside, in the warmth and cheerful atmosphere. Nobody is taking any notice of me, even though I’m right here.
My thoughts wander off, as I try to keep myself awake. I’ve boarded a train of thought, and it’s going nowhere in particular. I start to wonder; what would it be like to not have to care? What would it be like to be able to curl up somewhere and just sleep for a while?
I’m abruptly kicked off my train of thought by the stinging of cold air in my nostrils. I tell myself that there isn’t any point in hoping or dreaming of being something or someone else, because I’m me. I have ended up exactly where I started: It’s cold tonight.

My poem is composed in free verse, but some of the lines do rhyme. I have used an anapestic form of meter in the 6th and 7th lines of the first stanza, and iambic tetrameter in the first lines of the 2nd and 3rd stanzas. I have utilized repetition in the first and last lines of the poem, the first lines of the 2nd and 3rd stanzas, the last few words of the 6th and 7th lines of the 1st stanza, and also the words ‘cold tonight’. I have added in a touch of alliteration with the words ‘freezing fluorescent’ sitting together, and imagery, in the form of a bear in slumber all winter, or a fish not breathing.

Hope.
Hope is pure white,
It tastes like freshly baked butter cookies.
Hope smells like a baby,
It looks like an unfurling silk ribbon.
It sounds like the flapping of wings.
Hope feels like a wave of
relief.
